Why Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Why is travel insurance so important?

Travel insurance helps protect travelers from the unexpected. Unfortunately, mishaps or accidents do happen – and travel insurance is designed to help protect travelers financially.

At Travelex, we help travelers safely and confidently explore the world. Our travel insurance plans can help in the event of:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Travel delay
  • Lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage and personal effects
  • Emergency medical and dental expenses
  • Accidental death and dismemberment; and more

Importantly, all our plans include 24/7 global travel assistance – with our experienced team on hand to help with medical emergencies. Simply call our 24/7 number for assistance or use the tap-to-call feature on our Travel On App.

How does travel insurance work?

We recommend travelers – or their booking agents – purchase a travel insurance plan when the first trip payment is made. The earlier you purchase travel insurance, the sooner the trip is protected. Always carefully read the policy or description of coverage documents to find out when coverage starts, as it will vary depending on the protection plan and optional upgrades selected.

When you purchase an insurance plan, Travelex will provide you with coverage for the mishaps and accidents included in your policy. Limits apply to each plan type. For example: if your baggage is lost upon your arrival at your destination, the Advantage plan provides up to $1,000 and the Ultimate plan provides up to $2,000 of coverage. The policy and description of coverage documents you receive will have a complete list of plan exclusions and limitations.

If anything goes wrong, the insured traveler can either contact our assistance team for emergencies or put in a claim via our website to be reimbursed on eligible claims.

What does travel insurance cover?

Coverage limits vary depending on the Travelex plan selected. With five plans available (from comprehensive coverage to post-departure only) — plus customizable upgrades — there is a plan for every customer.

You’re eligible for coverage for unforeseen events on your journey that fit within the items specified in your policy. We recommend reading your policy or description of coverage carefully to ensure you’re satisfied with the levels of coverage. All of our plans come with a 21-day review period* where you can cancel the policy if you have not departed on your trip or filed a claim. Please check your policy or description of coverage for details.

What are some examples?

  • My daughter is too sick to travel - When you purchase a plan that offers trip cancellation/interruption coverage you may be eligible to cancel or interrupt your trip for an unforeseen sickness and be reimbursed for any prepaid, non-refundable expenses that you insured relating to your trip.
  • My travel supplier just declared bankruptcy - Common carriers with financial difficulties are becoming increasingly common. Purchasing trip cancellation/interruption coverage from Travelex can help protect you from losing your trip investment due to such an occurrence.
  • We were on our way home when the airline went on strike - The travel delay benefit offers coverage for additional meals and lodging for unforeseen strikes that affect a common carrier.
  • I arrived but my luggage didn't - If your bag is delayed, you can be reimbursed for the purchase of reasonable additional clothing and personal articles so you can enjoy your vacation.
  • We missed our connection because of a flight delay - Weather and mechanical difficulties often delay arrival into a connecting city past the departure of the next flight. If the cause of the flight delay was at least 3 hours long, you may be reimbursed the un-used portion of your trip plus reasonable additional lodging and meals.
  • We were traveling when I suddenly developed chest pains - When a medical emergency happens far away from home and from proper medical facilities, you want to ensure you receive adequate care. Our emergency medical expense benefit can help cover unforeseen costs of treatment while on your trip, and, if deemed medically necessary, our emergency evacuation benefit can help cover emergency transportation for you to the nearest facility or back home.
  • My wallet with my credit cards and passport has been stolen - Our 24/7 travel assistance service will assist you in reporting your lost documents and make arrangements for an emergency cash transfer should that be required.
