Every traveler has a fear that they’ll arrive at their destination only to find out their luggage has been lost, damaged or delayed. It can wreak havoc on travel plans – but it needn’t cost a fortune.

What does baggage insurance cover?

At Travelex, we offer coverage for lost, damaged, and stolen luggage and belongings, as well as baggage delays, in most of our plans.

  • $500 aggregate on all losses to: jewelry, watches, furs, precious or semi-precious gems, cameras and camera equipment, digital or electronic equipment and media
  • $0 deductible per covered trip

Upgrade baggage to increase coverage

Traveling with expensive gear? Our Ultimate, Advantage and Travel Med Go plans offer travelers the option to upgrade their baggage coverage. This can increase maximum coverage limits for lost or stolen baggage and add coverage for lost or stolen electronics and professional equipment, as well as sporting equipment rental if sporting equipment is lost, damaged or stolen.

What does baggage insurance not cover?

There are some exclusions to what baggage insurance can cover. Travelex will not pay for damage to or loss of the following items:

  • Animals
  • Property used in trade, business or for the production of income; household furniture; musical instruments; brittle or fragile articles; jewelry; or if the loss results from the use thereof, sporting equipment
  • Boats, motors, motorcycles, motor vehicles, aircraft, and other conveyances (except wheelchairs) or equipment, or parts for such conveyances
  • Artificial limbs or other prosthetic devices, artificial teeth, dental bridges, dentures, dental braces, retainers or other orthodontic devices, hearing aids, any type of eyeglasses, sunglasses or contact lenses
  • Documents or tickets, except for administrative fees required to reissue tickets up to $250 per ticket
  • Money, checks of any kind, stamps, stocks and bonds, postal or money orders, securities, accounts, bills, deeds, food stamps, or credit cards, except as otherwise specifically included elsewhere in the policy
  • Property shipped as freight or shipped prior to the Scheduled Date of Departure
  • Contraband

We will not pay for loss to baggage and personal effects arising from:

  • Defective materials or craftsmanship
  • Normal wear and tear, gradual deterioration, inherent vice
  • Rodents, animals, insects or vermin
  • Electrical current, including electric arcing that damages or destroys electrical devices or appliances
  • Mysterious disappearance
  • Confiscation by airport personnel

Baggage lost, stolen, or damaged?

The traveler must:

  • Immediately report the incident to the hotel manager, tour guide or representative, transportation official, local police, or other local authorities and obtain a written report of the loss
  • Take reasonable steps to protect baggage from further damage and make necessary, reasonable and temporary repairs. The plan will not pay for further damage if the traveler fails to protect their baggage.

Baggage delayed or misdirected for 12 hours or more?

We can help reimburse expenses through the baggage delay benefit, helping to cover the cost of reasonable additional clothing and personal articles purchased or rented, and expenses incurred to expedite the return of the baggage

What to know:

  • The Insured must provide documentation of the delay or misdirection of the baggage by the common carrier, and receipts for the necessary personal effects and sporting equipment rental purchases.
  • Coverage terminates upon arrival at the traveler’s return destination
  • The maximum we will pay is limited to the limit shown in the traveler’s policy
